More than 30 Baldwin junior high students to be published through national writing contest
Achievement demonstrates district’s continued commitment to literacy and writing in preparing students for success
BALDWIN, Mich. — Thirty-one Baldwin Community Schools sixth and seventh graders will soon experience the thrill of seeing their original stories in print as part of a national creative writing contest sponsored by Young Writers USA.
The students in teacher Lisa Davis’ English language arts classes took part in the writing contest called “Integer - The Mystery of Numbers.” The contest was organized in coordination with middle and junior high schools across the country to encourage children and young adults to read, write and enjoy creative writing. The contest is affiliated with Young Writers USA, a national organization that promotes creative writing in schools nationwide.
“We are so proud of these students who put their creativity and writing skills to the test in this competitive nationwide writing contest,” said Stewart Nasson, Baldwin Junior-Senior High School principal. “Their success is a testament to Ms. Davis and all our teachers and support staff who prioritize a strong English language arts education that prepares our Panthers for the real world and jobs.”
The students each wrote 100-word, “mini-sagas” inspired by numbers that will be published in an upcoming Young Writers book. Their work was judged on imagination, creativity, original story ideas and use of language. In addition to having their pieces published, each of the Baldwin students received a certificate and bookmark.
“I would like to personally congratulate these outstanding students for their achievement and am excited to read their stories in print,” said David Forrester, Baldwin Community Schools superintendent. “These students demonstrate the central role that literacy, writing and creativity play in a top-notch education.”
